This recipe is easily doubled. This tomato sauce is freezer friendly. Use Basic Tomato Sauce for a variety of meals like pasta and tomato sauce, pizza and eggplant parmesan. To make this sauce dairy-free, the unsalted butter can be substituted with extra-virgin olive oil. 2 28-ounce cans crushed tomatoes 1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter 1 yellow onion, halved 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt pepper, to taste (optional) In a saucepan, add the tomatoes, butter, onion, salt and pepper. Warm over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer. Let simmer for at least 20 minutes, up to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat.
