Three Kings’ Day. Many celebrate it with a unique Mexican tradition that has a lot of people going to bakeries searching for this special pastry every year. Here is an explanation of the tradition of making Rosca de Reyes.

Every year on January 6th, hispanics and Mexicans alike hold gatherings with family and friends to partake in the celebration of Día de los Reyes, and feasting on ‘Rosca’ is the highlight.  Rosca de Reyes is a traditional bread enjoyed by Christians to commemorate El Día de Los Tres Reyes Magos, or Three Kings’ Day.  The holiday honors the day the Three Kings visited the newborn baby Jesus and officially ends the holiday season in Mexico and Latin America.

Perhaps the best part of the holiday is the porcelain baby Jesus figurine that’s baked in the center for someone to find. Tradition has it that whoever finds it must host a party and make tamales for Día de la Candelaria, or Candlemas Day, on February 2nd. Whoever finds the toy in their slice of rosca is also said to have good luck and good fortune throughout the year.

The signature soft bread, which is shaped like a ring, is not only a dessert shared with family, but a representation of the king’s crown and God’s eternal love. Alongside the Rosca bread, many families serve tamales to enjoy a hearty meal. We recommend for the Rosca to also be paired with Abuelita brand hot chocolate.
